Knight Guardian

Today I was playing over the board while playing chess on the computer and in order to deliver a checkmate to my opponents king I had to use my knight as a protector for my queen so white's king couldn't take it because you want to make sure your queen is safe while still delivering a checkmate at the same time, otherwise it may not be a checkmate?
