Forcing the King into checkmate

Tonight I played a game of chess with a new AI that doesn't play bad except I think I was able to think ahead of the player the whole time with enough confidence that I won once I forced my opponent's king into checkmate because he had no where go and I had him where I wanted him, but either I've gotten better at this game or my opponent isn't that good at it?
